How Keepr's Stripe fees work
Two fees come out of every card payment: Stripe's processing fee and Keepr's transaction fee. Here's exactly what each costs and where it goes.
When a client pays a Keepr invoice by card, two separate fees come out of the payment: Stripe's processing fee (Stripe's own charge for handling the card) and Keepr's transaction fee (added on top, smaller). Together they are 2.5% + 20p on the Free plan and 1.5% + 20p on Pro.
Both fees come straight out of the payment Stripe deposits into your account - you never pay Keepr a separate bill.
The two fees, side by side
| Fee | Who charges it | Rate | How it's deducted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe processing fee | Stripe | 1.5% + 20p per UK card transaction | Taken by Stripe from the payment, on your Stripe account |
| Keepr transaction fee | Keepr | 1% (Free) or 0% (Pro) | Taken by Stripe at the moment of charge and routed to Keepr |
Free vs Pro: the all-in rate
Both fees combine into one all-in rate per transaction. The only difference between plans is the Keepr part.
| Plan | Stripe rate | Keepr fee | All-in rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 1.5% + 20p | 1% | 2.5% + 20p |
| Pro | 1.5% + 20p | 0% | 1.5% + 20p |
Worked examples
This is what you take home after fees on three sample invoices, comparing both plans:
| Invoice amount | Free plan: fee / you keep | Pro plan: fee / you keep | Pro saves you |
|---|---|---|---|
| £100 | £2.70 / £97.30 | £1.70 / £98.30 | £1.00 |
| £500 | £12.70 / £487.30 | £7.70 / £492.30 | £5.00 |
| £1,000 | £25.20 / £974.80 | £15.20 / £984.80 | £10.00 |
The maths is straightforward: the gap between the two plans' Keepr fees is exactly 1% (1% on Free, 0% on Pro). So you save £1 in fees per £100 invoiced through Stripe by being on Pro.
When the fee applies
The Keepr transaction fee only applies when:
If a client pays you by bank transfer, cash, or any other method, no Keepr fee applies - just record the payment manually against the invoice. Same goes for Stripe payments taken outside Keepr (for example, a separate Stripe payment link).
Where the fees show up
| Where | What you see |
|---|---|
| Settings → Payments | A note next to the Stripe connection block showing your current plan's fee structure |
| Your Stripe dashboard | Each charge with Stripe's processing fee, and the Keepr application fee as a separate line |
| Keepr invoice payment record | The Keepr fee on that payment is stored on the payment record - Stripe's own fee lives in Stripe, not Keepr |
Upgrading or downgrading mid-month
The fee rate is read from your plan at the moment a payment is taken. Switch from Free to Pro today and the next card payment skips the Keepr fee entirely - immediately, no waiting. Payments already taken keep their original fee; nothing is retroactively adjusted.
Refunds
Refunds are issued from your Stripe dashboard, not from Keepr. Stripe handles the mechanics - Keepr doesn't have a refund button on the invoice.
How Keepr compares
Most UK accounting tools either charge a monthly subscription and pass Stripe's fee through unchanged, or are free and add a transaction fee. Keepr does both - a small transaction fee on the free tier (which funds the platform), or a much smaller one on Pro.
| Tool | Subscription | Stripe fee on top |
|---|---|---|
| Keepr Free | £0 | 1.5% + 20p + 1% Keepr |
| Keepr Pro | £9/month (£7 annual) | 1.5% + 20p + 0% Keepr |
| FreeAgent | £19-29/month | 1.5% + 20p (no add-on) |
| FreshBooks | Subscription only | 1.5% + 20p (no add-on) |
